Now that it’s officially autumn, it is not a bad idea to start thinking about how your car will hold up in the upcoming fall and winter months. As you may already know cold temperatures can have quite the effect on your car. It may be tempting to ignore the maintenance for your car with the mentality that as long as it’s still running it’s fine, right? Well, not necessarily.

During the cold months, vehicles can have a very hard time functioning in certain weather conditions and your car battery especially takes quite the beating when it gets cold. Just starting your engine while it’s cold is putting more strain on the battery . The chemical reactions required to generate the electricity to start your car operate slower in lower conditions. If your car battery is dying or has not been changed in some time, it is especially at risk.

Calls for roadside assistance during this time of year skyrocket for this very reason. To help ensure that your car battery will survive the winter, listed below are some tips.

  • If your electronic devices are fully charged, don’t keep them plugged in the cigarette lighter.  Every time a device is plugged into a cigarette lighter socket it drains the vehicle’s battery which leads to a shorter lifespan.
  • Keep your car in the garage if you have one. The less exposed to the cold the more your car will continue to work quickly and efficiently when you start the engine.
  • If you do not have a garage or you have to park outside for whatever reason try to park the front of your car away from where the wind is blowing.
